Application Instructions

Application Instructions for Vinyl Stickers

We recommend that you read these application instructions in full before you apply your vinyl stickers, so you can fully understand the process and avoid any potential issues.

Your vinyl stickers are made up of three layers – the transfer paper (top layer), the actual vinyl decal (middle layer) and the backing paper (bottom layer).

Note: In rare cases, there is no transfer paper on top of the sticker. Examples of this include vinyl sheets and rolls which have been supplied uncut, and simple shaped vinyl stickers (such as rectangles and circles) that are ‘one piece’ decals. If this is the case for you, disregard any details mentioned below that relate to the transfer paper.

Step 1: Clean the area where you will be applying the decal to avoid any dirt from being trapped underneath. This will eliminate any unsightly bumps in the finished product, and will ensure that the decal will last a long time.

Handy hint: Try to apply the decal at room temperature or above. The warmer it is, the better it works, but try to avoid direct sunlight.

Step 2: Using a squeegee (a drivers license or credit card will do), flatten the decal on both sides by rubbing over it. If your decal was shipped rolled, lay it out flat and let it relax for an hour or so. The decal will be easier to handle if flat.

Step 3: Choose your application method:

Dry Application (A)

This method is recommended only for smaller stickers, or if you have extensive experience in applying vinyl stickers. The decals have a VERY strong adhesive backing, and you only get one shot at placing the sticker in the perfect position if you use this method. There is also a greater chance of getting air bubbles trapped underneath by using the dry application method.

Step 4A: Turn the decal face down and SLOWLY pull the backing paper off. The vinyl decal should stick to the transfer paper, exposing the adhesive side on the back. If part of the decal does not come off the backing paper, reapply the transfer paper to that portion of the decal, rub it gently again with your squeegee and then slowly peel it back off as normal.

Step 5A: Now you are ready to apply the decal. Hold the decal over your desired location and slowly apply the decal to the surface. Try to touch the surface first at the centre of the sticker and then flatten out to the sides. Next, use your squeegee again to flatten as much of the decal as possible. The transfer paper will allow you to rub the decal without damaging it.

Step 6A: Take a corner of the transfer tape and slowly peel it off the decal at a 45-degree angle. Remember, patience is the key here…do not rush. Once the transfer paper is removed, rub gently over the corners and points of your decal with your fingers to make sure they are fixed firmly to the surface.

REMEMBER: Once the decal touches your application surface, it cannot be moved again. Patience is the key.

Wet Application (B)

Recommended

We highly recommend this method, as it allows you to reposition your sticker until it is sitting in the perfect position. It’s also much easier to eliminate any air bubbles which may get trapped underneath your vinyl sticker.

Step 4B: Mix some water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Use a spray bottle to wet the area where the decal is to be applied.

Step 5B: Remove the backing paper and place the decal (still attached to the transfer paper) to the thoroughly wetted surface. The decal can then be gently moved and repositioned correctly, as your decal will slide on the thin film of solution trapped between the vinyl decal and the surface. When the decal is in the final location, use a squeegee or drivers license to squeeze the water and detergent solution out from under the decal. The transfer tape will protect the decal during this process.

CAUTION Be sure to squeegee as much of the water/detergent solution as possible from under the decal. Take your time, as the decal will not adhere to the surface enough to allow the easy removal of the transfer paper if there is moisture underneath the decal. Although a squeegee is the recommended tool, the water can also be removed by using your fingers, or a soft cloth.

Step 6B: When all moisture has been removed, the transfer paper can be carefully removed. Work the decal with your fingers, and a soft, absorbent cloth around the edges and corners to remove any remaining liquid. Warm weather is best for this application.

Handy hint: If you are applying your sticker to glass, it’s a good idea to leave the transfer tape on for 30-60 minutes to help with adhesion, as glass is extremely smooth.

Step 7B: If there are bubbles present under the decal that cannot be removed by working them to the edge of the decal with your fingers, a small pin or needle can be used to puncture the decal at the bubble, to remove the air. A small pin hole will not be seen after the air bubble has been worked out with the fingers.
